Hands-on Course on Neuropsychology: Assessment

This course is designed to expose young clinical neuropsychologists to evidence based clinical practice. The course is a set of practical assessment assignments of two patients. It is a “do” course and not a “listen” course.

Clinical neuropsychology is based on three pillars: functional neuroanatomy, psychometrics and clinical practice. It is assumed that all participants have had previous courses on functional neuroanatomy and psychometrics. This course takes these two pillars and exposes the course participants to clinical practice. For this purpose, the patient cases that have been developed require the participants to systematically follow each of the steps in the clinical assessment process. Each case begins with the referral and ends with the advice to be given to another professional, for example, a neurologist or a psychiatrist and to the family members of the patient.

The training cases require each participant to form ideas what the patients exhibit in term of cognitive, emotional and motor defects, learn to choose systematically tests to reject or confirm clinical ideas or hypotheses. The course stress comprehensiveness of the examination, but within a reasonable amount of time for daily practice. Clinical consistency and inconsistency of the anamnesis, test results and differences between tests are central concepts of the course. Participants are introduced to “self-referenced” and how “norm based” assessment, their differences and complementarity. An elementary battery of tests are illustrated and employed to assess the two course cases. These tests are available and normed within Brazil. The interpretation process and its pitfalls are demonstrated through the participants own assignments. Feedback is provided at each stage and common issues of assessment errors discussed, for example, over emphasizing specific anatomical locations as opposed to being aware of cognitive-emotional networks.

The book “A Compendium of Neuropsychological Tests” (Strauss, Sherman & Spreen, Oxford University Press, 3r edition) is used during the course. Prior to attending the course participants will be required to have read specific chapters of this book. Normative material and tables will be provided at the beginning of the course. Participants should bring their laptops, a memory stick (pen drive). Calculations will be done with the laptop. Each of the course cases will be used to develop reporting skills. Feedback will be given on report writing.

The course ends by each of the participants receiving the “test” case. This assignment is performed at home and sent to Professor Sergeant two weeks after the course. Professor Sergeant will mark and review this assignment, send it back to the participant and a discussion will take place on Skype between him and the participant. Reports meeting criteria will be credited and a certificate of the course given on fulfilling the required level; the certificate will be given by Centro de Estudos em Neuropsicologia.
